What is CareSync Exchange?

CareSync Exchange is Victoria’s secure statewide health information sharing system that provides authorised clinicians access to critical patient health information when they need it the most.

The Health Service Act 1988 was amended to allow for health information sharing between specified public health services via a secure centralised system. The legislation came into effect 7 February 2024.

In early 2025, the Department of Health in collaboration with the first group of 9 health services will begin a staged clinical onboarding and adoption program, continuing throughout the year.

They include:

  • Austin Health
  • Eastern Health
  • Northern Health
  • Alfred Health
  • Monash Health
  • Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
  • The Royal Melbourne Hospital
How does it make a difference to patient care?

Making health information readily and securely available to clinicians is essential for providing the best patient care for Victorians.

There are multiple Electronic Medical Records (EMR) vendors in Victorian Public Health Services and many health services are still on paper-based systems. This makes it difficult for health services to locate and share information with other health services in a secure manner.

CareSync Exchange provides clinicians with a secure, centralised, and up-to-date source of health information. Using the system at the point of care, saves time, promotes better clinical decisions, and reduces costly duplication of tests, to enhance the quality of care for all Victorians.

What do clinicians need to do?

Your health service determines which clinicians can access CareSync Exchange.

All authorised clinicians are required to complete the “Privacy and Security” eLearn that will be available via your health service’s Learning Management System (LMS).

This will help ensure you understand your obligations when accessing and sharing patients’ health information in CareSync Exchange.
